Water consumption per overnight is significant, particularly in 4* and 5* hotels. Water is mainly wasted by guest, for pools and for watering plants. Technically the water consumption can be limited in guest rooms and in public areas, watering plants need clear rules so that excessive irrigation can be avoided and fresh water consumption for pools needs to be adjusted. Another area of concern is the laundry as industrial washing machines have a high energy and water consumption, sometimes aligned with high use of washing detergents.
The collection of rainwater is limited by the opportunities to use the water afterwards. Therefore it is helpful to include drains and piping system already in the design stage. However, simple solutions often do not require excessive investments and rainwater for watering plants, the laundry or service areas provide a simple and interesting opportunity.
